Stephanie Cannon and Matt Knowles are the dynamic duo behind Insymmetry Creations, LLC, a creative powerhouse that has carved a unique niche in the indie comics world.

Based in California and Florida, respectively, this bi-coastal team combines their passion for storytelling, steampunk aesthetics, and diverse genres to produce comics, graphic novels, and even metal music. Since joining forces in 2018, they’ve built a reputation for their innovative narratives and engaging convention presence, captivating fans with titles like Heirs of Isildur, Tales from Nocturnia, and Misfitz Clubhouse. Their work spans steampunk, medieval fantasy, horror, and all-ages adventures, showcasing their versatility and commitment to creative storytelling.

The Origin of Insymmetry Creations

The story of Insymmetry Creations began when Cannon and Knowles, who initially connected through social media, realized their creative synergy. Knowles had already been developing Heirs of Isildur, a steampunk comic series, while Cannon was making strides in the indie comics scene with her short story Boot Hill, a finalist in the 2017 Ghost City Comics Competition.

Their first collaboration came at Aethertopia 2018, a steampunk festival where Cannon supported Knowles’ Heirs of Isildur. This partnership sparked a creative alliance, leading to the formation of Insymmetry Creations as a unified platform for their projects. As Knowles noted in an interview, their collaboration made them “stronger together than separate,” allowing them to merge their talents and create a diverse portfolio under one banner.

Key Comic Titles

Heirs of Isildur

Heirs of Isildur is the flagship title of Insymmetry Creations, blending steampunk, time travel, and heavy metal influences. Originally released as an 11-issue series titled The Crossroads Conundrum, it was later reformatted into a 268-page graphic novel.

The story follows a time-traveling narrative, accompanied by a 12-track metal album that enhances its immersive experience. The series has since expanded with arcs like Nightmare Scenario and The Perilous Prospects, with Knowles as the lead writer and Cannon as co-writer and assistant. The combination of comics and music sets this series apart, appealing to fans of both genres.

Tales from Nocturnia

Tales from Nocturnia transports readers to a medieval fantasy world inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and Game of Thrones. This series, co-created and co-written by Cannon and Knowles, has been released in individual issues, including special holofoil and homage covers, and collected into a trade paperback.

The third issue, Welcome to the Dragon’s Lair, was a Kickstarter success, accompanied by a metal album that complements its epic storytelling. The series debuted notably at conventions, with support from creators like Richard Rivera of Stabbity Bunny fame.

Misfitz Clubhouse

Aimed at all-ages readers, Misfitz Clubhouse is described as a whimsical blend of Gravity Falls, Wreck-It Ralph, and Fairly OddParents. The first issue, Sharks, Dragons, and Little Red Wagons, released in 2023, features stories like “Pinball Madness” and “Dress Up Mess Up,” with art by Rahil Mohsin and colors by Marcos Rocha. Crowdfunded through Kickstarter, this series showcases Cannon and Knowles’ ability to craft lighthearted, family-friendly content alongside their darker, more mature titles.

Other Projects

Beyond their main series, Cannon and Knowles have contributed to various anthologies and new titles. Their horror mini-series Hexed was picked up by Alterna Comics, while I Am Qido, a far-east fantasy horror graphic novel, and Tatsumi: The Serpent Mistress, a swashbuckling high-seas adventure, further expand their catalog. They’ve also collaborated on anthology stories like those in the Cthulhu Invades trilogy and Holiday Spirits by Orange Cone Productions.

Creative Process and Contributions

Cannon and Knowles bring distinct strengths to their partnership.

Knowles, a former metal band frontman and stadium announcer for USL League 2’s Brave SC, serves as the primary writer for many projects and handles editing for Cannon’s freelance work. His experience in music and public speaking infuses their comics with a performative energy, particularly in Heirs of Isildur’s accompanying albums.

Cannon, a lifelong horror fan, contributes as a co-writer, editor, and creative consultant, with a strong focus on horror and geek culture. Her freelance writing includes nearly 100 articles for outlets like Fangoria, Horror Geek Life, and Creepy Kingdom, covering film reviews, editorials, and audiobook critiques. Her short stories, such as Bogey and Light Reflected, have appeared in anthologies by Alterna Comics and others.

Their collaborative process is rooted in mutual trust and complementary skills. Cannon’s research and editorial expertise support Knowles’ bold storytelling, while their shared love for genre fiction drives their diverse output. Their work with publishers like Scout Comics and Simon & Schuster, alongside successful crowdfunding campaigns, highlights their ability to balance independent and mainstream avenues.

Convention Presence and Community Engagement

Cannon and Knowles are fixtures on the convention circuit, known for their steampunk attire and engaging panels. They’ve appeared at major events like San Diego Comic-Con, WonderCon, MegaCon Orlando, and Spooky Empire, as well as smaller shows like Ocala Comic-Con and Daytona Beach Comic Convention. Knowles often serves as a panel host, emcee, or cosplay contest moderator, while Cannon contributes to panels on crowdfunding and indie comics. Their interactive presence, combined with unique offerings like commissioned leatherwork, woodwork, and a full-sized Dragon Lord mask, makes their booths a fan favorite.

Their Substack, Insymmetry Creations BLOG of DESTINY!, keeps fans updated on their projects, convention appearances, and media consumption, including Cannon’s audiobook reviews and Knowles’ metal music recommendations. This platform, along with their active social media presence (@insymCreations on Twitter, @insymmetrycreations on Instagram), fosters a strong connection with their audience.

Insymmetry Creations continues to push boundaries with upcoming projects like Tatsumi: The Serpent Mistress #1 that launched on Kickstarter May 2025.

Described as a tale of “retribution and revenge” on the high seas, it promises to showcase their signature blend of action and intricate storytelling. With a growing catalog and a dedicated fanbase, Cannon and Knowles are poised to remain influential figures in the indie comics scene.

Stephanie Cannon and Matt Knowles have built Insymmetry Creations into a vibrant hub for genre-defying comics and multimedia projects. Their ability to weave steampunk, fantasy, horror, and all-ages stories, often paired with music and unique merchandise, sets them apart in the indie landscape.
